(Reuters.com) – New research from British Airways has found that 90 percent of Britons don’t use up to 30 percent of the items they take away with them on holiday.

The survey, conducted on behalf of the UK flag carrier by Opinion Matters, asked travellers about the most random item they have ever taken on holiday and not used.

Teabags and kettles featured highly in the list, as did foodstuffs and condiments, including sardines, peanut butter, marmite and super noodles.

Responding to the findings, BA’s branding and marketing boss Abigail Comber said: “(Brits) don’t really want to have to choose between books, toiletries or teabags, or to dress kids in half their holiday clothes just to avoid excess baggage fees.”

She added that more than one in five customers does not look into baggage limits before they travel.

Unlike the stringent luggage restrictions on most low-cost carriers where checked luggage carries additional charges, BA passengers can check in a bag weighing up to 23kg – and carry two bags on to the plane – for free.

In the survey, travellers from Scotland and the east of England were found to have paid the most in excess baggage fees. An airline representative did not know why this may be.

BA argues that weight limit allowances are a big factor in airline selection. According to the airline’s Amanda Allen, “When people realise how much more they can take and that the price is included, it becomes more important. Especially people travelling with families.”

Over 40 percent of the 1,176 people questioned in the survey admitted to packing three or more pairs of shoes,

Eagle dinner of washed fox meat

MANILA, Philippines — In the home of the hunters, Altai golden eagles (“berkuts”) eat first; the master and his family, last.

Kazakh “berkutchis” (eagle hunters) treat their eagles like their own children and revere them as protectors who ward off evil and guard their loved ones and their sacred hearths.

Shamans often take on the spirit of eagles. They adorn babies’ cradles with the raptors’ beaks and talons as talismans. And “berkuts” heal. To calm down the deranged and ease the pain of childbirth, Kazakhs bring them an eagle and make them listen to the raptor’s call.

So, I wasn’t surprised that before Tekei’s family and guests sat down for supper, my host sprawled to one side of the lodge, slicing fox meat to bite-sized slivers, washing them in water before placing them in a wooden scoop to feed his eagle.

“She shouldn’t drink blood. She’ll get fat and refuse to hunt,” he explained through Zaya, our Boojum Expedition guide-interpreter, when I asked why he rinsed the meat.

Tekei was a third-generation “berkutchi”. He grew up under the Socialist regime, finished secondary school and served in the military before working as a wrangler-farmer. He married Abijak at 26 but started hunting with eagles late, at 45, after all his kids had grown up.

As the youngest son, he stayed with his parents and inherited their property, according to Kazakh custom. None of his brothers wanted to be a “berkutchi”. He’s 62 now and intends to hunt with eagles for as long as he can. It’s an exhilarating sport, he acknowledged.

“My grandfather was an eagle-hunter. He taught my father, who taught me all he knew,” he narrated. “My father trained more than

2012 marks a more vibrant era for Philippine tourism, says Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. (Photos from: www.philippinetourism.us; www. wikipedia.com)

MANILA, Philippines — After the successful launch of the Department of Tourism’s people’s campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”,  2012 promises to be a vibrant and promising year for tourism as the department intensifies its efforts to reach its four million target for this year and optimistically 10 million visitors by the end of 2016.

“People keep asking me why I raised the target from six million to 10 million in 2016. I always say that if all we have by 2016 is six million, we would have spent all this time only to end up with a bigger gap between us and Vietnam. The 10 million target mark is crucial not only for this administration, it is crucial for this country because at 10 million arrivals, tourism has finally become a serious source of business, income, jobs and pride for the Filipinos,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. said.

To usher in a new era in Philippine tourism, the ever enthusiastic Jimenez shared the Department of Tourism’s (DoT) 2012 Tourism Roadmap during the recent Philippine Tour Operators Association’s (PHILTOA) 1st General Membership meeting.

According to the secretary, investments by government through PPP (public-private partnerships) will be poured into infrastructure development to address accessibility into and around the archipelago. Product development and enhancement will be aided by capacity building of local governments and communities and attractive incentives for businesses.

Thus, expect to see the DoT forging more convergence with key government agencies like DPWH, DOTC, DOF, as well as more partnerships with LGUs and the private sector.

“For the first time in the history of the
